By Joost - Florist, Artist, Activist

Joost Bakker

Joost Bakker, a creative and visionary; a sustainable designer and a florist. An interesting mix for sure but never the less one that is producing excellent results.

The Dutch-born Joost (apparently pronounced 'Yoast') has been a keen ambassador for sustainable design and 'living' installations for the last 5 years.

'A fifth-generation tulip farmer, he has created celebrated installations that fuse nature with a raw, industrial sensibility, encouraging discussion about sustainable design practices in the process.'

For the last decade Joost has been rising in acclaim captivating audiences with wonderful exhibitions and installations made out of 'the stuff other people throw out'.

The Greenhouse

In 2008, Rob Adams, Urban Planner for the City of Melbourne suggested Federation Square, Melbourne be the location for Joost's next installation, the 'Greenhouse'.
A eco-friendly eatery who's success and popularity saw sibling 'Greenhouses' pop up in Sydney and Perth, then return to Melbourne in March of this year for Melbourne’s annual Food and Wine Festival.

One of Joost's signature pieces is the vertical garden. Now able to be spotted in restaurant and commercial spaces all over Melbourne, these simple designs are popular for both aesthetic and practical purposes.

Appropriate for both indoor and outdoor spaces, Joost's vertical garden installations come in a variety of designs to suit all d├ęcors and tastes. You can purchase a column garden via their online store.

'BUILT by Joost' is another initiative driven by the Dutchman. The team at BUILT by Joost offer designed and constructed buildings that are made to represent practical and effective sustainable design.  Utilising efficient design considerations and materials like straw, light gauge steel and low VOC paints, they are buildings with sustainable design principles that create positive environmental impact.

Further information can be found in their brochure.
